Will Maharashtra’s voters forgive the 2022 mutiny of chief minister Eknath Shinde or will they give their stamp of approval to Uddhav Thackeray’s ideological shift which saw him leave the NDA fold and join hands with the Congress and Sharad Pawar-led NCP after the 2019 elections? The answer will decide who holds the reins to the key state in an epic Shiv Sena vs Shiv Sena war.
In the 2024 elections, Shinde’s Sena and Sena (UBT) will lock horns in 51 seats, most of which have a higher concentration of Marathi voters. Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli-Ambarnath, Navi Mumbai, Virar-Vasai, Bhiwandi, Badlapur, Mahim, and Byculla are some of the seats that will see this contest.
For both Senas, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) belt—especially Thane—is a crucial region. The undivided Sena of Bal Thackeray had made its mark in state politics by winning the Thane Municipal Corporation in the 1970s against a powerful Congress. For Shinde, the fight is personal. According to Hindustan Times, decades ago, Shinde’s family migrated from Satara to Thane where the Maharashtra chief minister joined the Sena at the young age of 18.
