Sachin Khilari, who hails from the small village of Karagani in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, was born into a farmer’s family.

Shot-putter Sachin Khilari could not emulate his World Championship and Asian Games success at the Paris Paralympics claiming a silver medal behind Canada’s Greg Stewart in the Men’s Shot Put – F46 Final at Stade de France – Standing SP on Wednesday, thus extending India’s tally to 21 medals at the 2024 Games.

Khilari, who hails from the small village of Karagani in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, was born into a farmer’s family. Sachin’s life took a dramatic turn when a tragic accident during his school days left him with a disability in his left hand. However, this challenge became the catalyst for his remarkable journey in the world of para-sports.

Sachin’s early life was fraught with hardships. Losing his mother at a young age and enduring a debilitating injury from a bicycle accident, Sachin faced numerous surgeries that ultimately failed to restore full function to his hand. Despite these setbacks, his father’s unwavering support came to the fore. Serving as both mother and father to Sachin and his younger brother, his father instilled in him the belief that his impairment was not a hindrance but a unique gift.

In 2015, Sachin was introduced to the world of para-sports and he participated in the National Games in Jaipur in 2017, where he won his first gold medal. This victory marked the beginning of a new chapter, as Sachin began training under the guidance of coach Satyanarayana, who played a pivotal role in refining his skills and encouraging him to pursue athletics full-time by 2019.
