Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement on August 24.

Shikhar Dhawan was the highest run-scorer in India’s triumphant Champions Trophy campaign in 2013.

The “Gabbar era” in Indian cricket has come to an end. Shikhar Dhawan has said good bye to the international and domestic circuits at the age of 38. The former opening batter revealed his decision via a video message on Saturday, August 24. Known for his fearless batting, Dhawan was a key member of India’s white-ball team from 2013 to 2018. He was the top scorer (363 runs) in the 2013 Champions Trophy, which India won under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Dhawan was also the highest run-getter of the 2015 ODI World Cup. He was recognised as “Mr. ICC”– a nickname that he earned for his consistent performance in major competitions.

Shikhar Dhawan was last seen in the Blue jersey in December 2022, featuring in an ODI match against Bangladesh in Chattogram. The last phase of his career was quite turbulent due to frequent injury issues. The Punjab Kings captain missed the majority of the last Indian Premier League (IPL) season for a shoulder injury that he sustained during a home match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He said, “As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. Thank you for the love and support! Jai Hind!”

After the news of his retirement came to light, many cricket fans paid tribute to Dhawan via social media posts. His former Indian teammates also extended best wishes for the second innings of his life.

Suresh Raina, who was also part of the Champions Trophy-winning squad in 2013, posted a heartfelt note for Dhawan on Instagram. “It was an absolute pleasure sharing the dressing room with you, brother. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours. Onwards and upwards,” wrote the Chennai Super Kings legend.

Another legendary Indian opener, Virender Sehwag congratulated Shikhar Dhawan on his “fantastic career.” The duo had played together in the IPL for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). Sehwag noted, “You can be proud of the way you gave your heart out every single time, Shikhar Dhawan. May you continue to have fun and live life to the fullest.”

Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav also expressed love for his “Shikhi Pa”. He wrote, “Your energy, passion and dedication have been an inspiration to all of us. You’ve brought so much joy both on and off the field.”

Veteran pace bowler Mohammed Shami shared on X (formerly Twitter), “An incredible journey comes to a close. Shikhar Dhawan, you’ve been a true inspiration on and off the field. You will always be the true “GABBAR” of Indian cricket.”

Among the other present-generation stars, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have congratulated Shikhar Dhawan via Instagram stories. Youngsters like Tilak Verma, Washington Sundar and Prithvi Shaw have also demonstrated their respect for the India legend.

Here’s how fans have reacted:

Despite being known as a white-ball specialist, Shikhar Dhawan scripted history in his maiden Test appearance. He slammed an 85-ball hundred against Australia and it still remains the fastest century by a debutant in the longest format. Dhawan has aggregated 10,867 runs in 269 international matches across formats.
