World’s Oldest Person, Who ‘Avoided Toxic People’ For Longevity, Dies At 117
The oldest person in the world, 117-year-old Maria Branyas Morera, passed away on August 19, 2024. As confirmed by the Gerontology Research Group, Maria Branyas “peacefully” took her last breath at a nursing home in Catalonia, Spain, where she spent the last two decades of her life. In January 2023, Guinness World Records recognised Maria as the world’s eighth-oldest person. The US-born woman, who had a clean bill of health, credited “avoiding toxic people” for her long life.

“Order, tranquillity, good connection with family and friends, contact with nature, emotional stability, no worries, no regrets, lots of positivity, and staying away from toxic people” is what helped Maria Branyas live a long and healthy life.
“I think longevity is also about being lucky. Luck and good genetics,” she said, as quoted by GWR. Following her demise, Maria’s official X account confirmed the news with a tweet: “Maria Branyas has left us. She has died as she wanted: in her sleep, peacefully, and without pain. A few days ago, he told us, “One day I will leave here. I will not try coffee again, nor eat yogurt, nor caress the fairy. I will also leave my memories and my reflections, and I will cease to exist in this body. One day, I don’t know, but it’s very close; this long journey will be over. Death will find me worn out from having lived so long, but I want it to find me smiling, free, and satisfied.” We will always remember her for her advice and kindness.”
Prior to her death, she dropped a slight hint about her death with a cryptic message on social media. “I feel weak The time is coming. Don’t cry, I don’t like tears. And above all don’t suffer for me. You know me, wherever I go I will be happy because somehow I will always take you with me,” she wrote.
“I quan la meva veu calli amb la mort, el meu cor et seguirà parlant d’amor” (Tagore). Em sento feble. S’acosta l’hora. No ploreu, no m’agraden les llàgrimes. I sobre tot no patiu per mi. Ja em coneixeu, allà on vagi serè feliç, doncs d’alguna manera us portaré sempre amb mi.— Super Àvia Catalana (@MariaBranyas112) August 19, 2024
Time and again, Branyas shared several updates about her health, explaining how a few factors help her in life. “Strong, rich, and caring family ties act as a mattress that cushions loneliness,” she wrote earlier this year.
Earlier in December 2022, Branyas said she had no worries or regrets and that she felt very positive.
