‘Our Athletes Reaffirm India’s Vision of Becoming Truly Multi-sporting Nation’: Nita Ambani

International Olympic Committee member Nita Ambani has praised the historic performance of the Indian contingent at the ongoing Paris Paralympics. On Friday, Praveen Kumar added a record sixth gold to India’s medal tally which has now risen to an all-time high of 26.

Nita, chairman of Reliance Foundation, congratulated the latest medal winners of the Paralympic Games.

“Every day in Paris, Team India continues to inspire and make the tricolour proud at the ongoing Paralympic Games!” she said on Friday.

“Many congratulations to Praveen Kumar, Kapil Parmar, Dharambir, Pranav Soorma, Harvinder Singh, Sachin Khilari, Ajeet Singh, Sundar Singh Gurjar, Sharad Kumar, Mariyappan Thangavelu, and Deepthi Jeevanji for their wins that have taken India’s medal tally to our highest ever in Paralympic history, 26 and counting!” she added.

Nita also believes that the performance is a proof that India is on the right track towards becoming a true multi-sporting nation.

“With every appearance on the global stage, our athletes reaffirm India’s vision of becoming a truly multi-sporting nation! More power to them and best wishes for the Games ahead,” she said.

India is currently at the 14th spot in the Paris Paralympics medals tally. Out of the 26 medals, para athletes have contributed 14 show far including three gold, six silver and five bronze. The next best haul has come from badminton events that include one gold, two silver and as many bronze. Shooters won four medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) while two have come from archery (1 gold, 1 bronze) and one from judo (bronze).

Meanwhile, Harvinder Singh and Preeti Pal have been named as India’s flag-bearers for the closing ceremony to be held on Sunday. Harvinder created history by becoming the first Indian archer to clinch a gold at the Paralympics while Preeti Pal became the first-ever Indian woman to win two medals at the quadrennial games.
