Obesity is continuing to remain one of the most concerning health issues, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that in 2022, approximately 2.5 billion people were overweight. This alarming statistic has raised concerns about the increasing prevalence of obesity and its associated health risks. Excess body weight contributes to various health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and even certain cancers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast, emphasised the seriousness of the situation. He highlighted a study revealing that one in eight individuals globally is living with obesity. Stressing the importance of addressing this issue, he remarked, “These statistics are very serious and force all of us to think why this is happening. Excess weight or obesity gives rise to many kinds of problems and diseases.”
PM Modi’s Initiative
Taking action against obesity, PM Modi has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of excessive oil consumption and the need for a healthier lifestyle. He urged influential figures to join this movement and nominate others to amplify its reach. “As mentioned in yesterday’s #MannKiBaat, I would like to nominate the following people to help strengthen the fight against obesity and spread awareness on reducing edible oil consumption in food. I also request them to nominate 10 people each so that our movement gets bigger!” he posted on X.
Link between oil consumption and obesity
One of the significant contributors to obesity is excessive consumption of oil. Just one tablespoon of oil contains around 120 calories, leading to an increased overall calorie intake. Regular consumption of refined oils, especially those high in trans fats and omega-6 fatty acids, contributes to fat accumulation, inflammation, and metabolic disorders. Fried and processed foods further escalate weight gain by providing empty calories without essential nutrients. Over time, excessive oil consumption can lead to insulin resistance, increased bad cholesterol (LDL), and a sluggish metabolism, all of which raise the risk of obesity and related health complications.
PM Modi underscored the importance of reducing oil consumption, stating that limiting oil intake is not merely a personal choice but a responsibility toward one’s family and society.
