An Independent candidate contesting the Deoli-Uniara Assembly bypoll in Rajasthan’s Tonk district allegedly slapped a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) on Wednesday.

The incident took place when the area magistrate, Amit Chaudhary, was conducting election duty.

Naresh Meena, a Congress rebel running as an Independent, allegedly caught SDO Chaudhary by the collar and slapped him. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

The bypolls, which are being held for seven Assembly seats in Rajasthan, are currently underway, with voter turnout reaching nearly 25% by 11 am. The counting of votes will take place on November 23.

District Election Officer and Tonk Collector Saumya Jha said that the villagers of Samravta, part of Nagar Fort Tehsil, had announced a boycott of the election.

“The village currently comes under the Nagar Fort Tehsil. The villagers are demanding that the village be brought under the Uniara Tehsil which is nearer,” she said.

Meena had supported the villagers’ boycott call. When SDO Chaudhary visited Samravta to persuade the residents to participate in the election, Meena allegedly attacked him, Jha noted.

About the villagers’ demand, she said that it was raised a few days ago and they were told that the matter would be taken up after the model code of conduct is lifted.
