1-3 of 10 Indians have liver disease, says health ministry; here’s how to ensure you’re safe

-

The Union Health Ministry has taken a proactive step to combat the rising prevalence of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) in India. It has released updated guidelines and a training manual to address this significant public health concern.

NAFLD, closely linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, is a growing issue in India. According to Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra, “India has taken the lead in recognising NAFLD as a major NCD…Out of 10, one to three people can have NAFLD,” he added, highlighting how widespread the issue is.

Dr Amogh Dudhwewala, Consultant – Gastroenterology, Yatharth Hospital, Noida Extension, explained that to ensure liver health and prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, especially in light of this alarming statistic, consider the following guidelines:

1. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Obesity is a significant risk factor for NAFLD. Aim for a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and regular exercise.

2. Eat a Balanced Diet
Focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins (like legumes and fish). Limit saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, and sugars. Avoid raw or undercooked shellfish due to the risk of infections.

3. Exercise Regularly
Engage in physical activity to help burn triglycerides and reduce liver fat. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week.

4. Avoid Alcohol and Toxins
Limit alcohol consumption to prevent liver damage. The recommended maximum is two daily drinks for men and one for women. Additionally, avoid exposure to environmental toxins from cleaning products and pesticides.

5. Practice Safe Sex
Hepatitis B and C can lead to chronic liver disease. Use protection during sexual activities and avoid sharing personal hygiene items like razors or toothbrushes.

6. Get Vaccinated
Vaccines are available for hepatitis A and B, which can prevent these viral infections from damaging the liver. Consult your healthcare provider about vaccination if you are at risk.

7. Be Cautious with Medications
Some medications can harm the liver, especially when taken in excess or combined with alcohol. Always consult your doctor about the potential side effects of any prescribed medication.

8. Regular Health Check-ups
Regular screenings can help detect liver issues early. If you have risk factors, such as obesity or a family history of liver disease, discuss testing options with your healthcare provider.

By adopting these lifestyle changes, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing liver disease and ensure your liver remains healthy. Prioritising a balanced diet, regular exercise, and safe practices will contribute to overall well-being and liver health.
