Since February 1992, Hassan Nasrallah has been serving as the secretary-general of Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group.

The Israeli military announced on Saturday, September 28, that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah had been killed during a targeted airstrike in Beirut.

“Hassan Nasrallah is dead,” military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani announced on X. Other Israeli military officials also confirmed that they “eliminated” the Hezbollah leader following strikes on Friday (September 27) on the Lebanese capital Beirut.

The development comes after Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Friday launched a series of precise strikes targeting Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah’s headquarters in the southern suburb of Dahiyeh in Beirut, Lebanon.

The strike that resulted in massive destruction marked one of the most significant military actions in the ongoing warfare between Israel and Hezbollah.

The recent escalation in Lebanon by Israeli forces in the backdrop of the Gaza war is marked by missile and rocket attacks on Hezbollah’s headquarters, signalling that the warfare is far from over.

Who Is Hassan Nasrallah? The Hezbollah Leader

Since February 1992, Hassan Nasrallah has been serving as the secretary-general of the Iran-backed militant group. He occupied the position after the assassination of his predecessor Abbas al-Musawi by Israeli forces.

Born on August 31, 1960, Nasrallah was brought up in the impoverished suburb of Burj Hammud in Beirut to a large Shia family. He focused on religious studies from an early age and eventually joined the Amal Movement, a Shia political and paramilitary group.

In the 1980s, Nasrallah played a pivotal role in the foundation of Hezbollah, following Israel’s strikes in Lebanon in 1982. The militant group was formed with the assistance of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which arrived in Lebanon to support the resistance force against the Israeli army. It accused Israel of occupying Muslim territories.

Over the years, Nasrallaha is said to have shaped Hezbollah’s role as Israel’s primary military adversary. Known for his public speaking, he has delivered several notable speeches in the past, often recording them from secret locations due to security concerns.

Nasrallah’s eldest son, Hadi, was killed in an Israeli attack in 1997 while fighting for the Hezbollah group. Now, a report surfaced claiming that the Hezbollah leader’s daughter, Zainab Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon’s Beirut on Friday, September 27.
