Some 53 people have been killed and 51 others are missing in Mexico’s Sinaloa state amid clashes between rival factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. The gruesome violence that first erupted on September 9 has so far shown no signs of abating, as per reports. The trigger for clashes dates to the July imprisonment of the cartel’s leader and co-founder, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia in the US. “El Mayo” joined his associate, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera, currently serving a life sentence in the US.The violence is believed to pit gang members loyal to “El Chapo” and his sons against others aligned with “El Mayo.” “El Mayo” alleges that a senior member of the Los Chapitos, another faction of the cartel, kidnapped him and then flew him to the US against his will.Since fighting broke out on September 9, shootouts have disrupted daily life in the Sinaloa capital, Culiacan. Masked men wielding military-grade weapons have taken control of the streets, with the sound of gunfire constantly echoing through the region.
