Nagpur: In a unique fusion of music and medicine, the “Heredity… and Me” event, organised at Scientific Hall on Thursday, captivated audiences with its insightful discussions on inherited diseases and the power of preventive measures. The event featured a stellar lineup of experts and performers who delivered a thought-provoking and entertaining experience.
Renowned cardiologist Dr Prabhakar Deshpande, the event’s keynote speaker, delivered a powerful message about the importance of traditional lifestyle and family discipline.“In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of the simple yet essential things that contribute to good health,” he remarked. “By embracing traditional values and making conscious choices, we can significantly reduce the risk of passing on inherited diseases to our children.”

Hereditary diseases, also known as genetic diseases, are conditions passed down from parents to their children through their genes. These diseases can range from mild to severe and can affect various parts of the body.
Heart disease is a broad term encompassing various conditions, and it can be hereditary in nature.
“It can be passed down through genes from parents to their children. On the same line, genetic factors can influence cholesterol levels significantly, with some individuals inheriting genes that predispose them to high cholesterol,” said Dr Deshpande.
Type-2 diabetes, the most common form, has a strong genetic component. People with a family history of diabetes are at a higher risk of developing the condition.
Dr Deshpande suggested that people with a family history of heart disease, diabetes, cholesterol, or high blood pressure should maintain a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, manage stress, and conduct regular health check-ups.
