Donald Trump claims China created COVID-19 to undermine his presidency during a Michigan town hall

Donald Trump made headlines during a town hall event in the state of Michigan, where he pushed the controversial theory that China “released Covid-19” from its Wuhan lab to undermine his presidency.

Speaking to a crowd in Flint that included Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump said, “…we had to focus on covid, which many people believe was released for a reason. It came out of the Wuhan lab, which I said from the beginning. All of you know this. It didn’t come out of a cave; it didn’t come from France. I call it the ‘China virus’ because I like to be accurate.”

The 78-year-old former US President claimed, “A lot of people think they did that because they were not happy with me as president.” The Republican presidential nominee’s comments comes amid heated political contest between him and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris ahead of the November election.

‘We did a great job’

During his speech, Trump insisted that he had done a “tremendous job” managing the pandemic, citing the stock market’s rise as evidence of his success. “We did a great job, but we never got credit,” he added. In what some deemed an incoherent moment, Trump asserted that he does not ramble, claiming instead to deliver complex sentences that connect various ideas.

He referenced the fictional character Hannibal Lecter to illustrate his point about connecting thoughts. “The fake news likes to say, ‘Oh he was rambling.’ No, no. That’s not rambling. That’s genius,” Trump said. When asked by a supporter about the biggest threat to Michigan’s automobile industry, Trump responded with an unexpected focus on nuclear weapons.

He stressed the danger posed by hostile nations and boasted about his ties with leaders like Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un. “It’s the single biggest threat to the world,” he said. “You won’t care about making cars if that stuff starts happening.” Trump sought to draw contrasts between himself and Harris, suggesting that while he may give lengthy answers, they are ultimately more productive than the US vice president. He claimed that his ability to connect ideas is what keeps crowds engaged at his rallies.
