In a memo, CEO Andy Jassy directed all remote employees to return to the office starting January 2025.
In a major shift, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has announced that remote work options will be eliminated starting next year, requiring all employees to return to the office full-time, five days a week. In a memo to staff, Jassy stated that this decision has been taken to “better set up to invent, collaborate, and be connected enough to each other.” Although Jassy has been quite skeptical of remote work, Amazon employees had previously been permitted to follow a hybrid work model.
Meanwhile, the tech giant’s push to get corporate staff back into the office has led to a series of tensions within the firm, which employs over 1.5 million people globally in various roles. Additionally, the announcement has triggered a flurry of reactions on social media, with many users sharing memes reflecting the widespread discontent among professionals. One popular meme features a video of Kamala Harris, humorously illustrating employees’ reactions to the mandate to return to the office.
Another scene from a film hilariously depicts the staff’s reactions.
This user wrote, “Amazon is forcing employees to return to office 5 days a week in January. Praying this doesn’t ripple across corporate America.”
A comment took a sarcastic dig at the decision, “Amazon: “We want everyone back in the office 5 days a week starting on Jan 2 2025 because somehow, being on a video call is better in the office than it is at home.”

“Andy Jassy just ordered all Amazon workers back into the office 5 days a week, starting in January. As expected, a lot of people weren’t happy about it. BI got a look at Amazon’s RTO Slack channel and…well, just read some of these reactions,” a comment read.

Earlier on Monday, CEO Andy Jassy said, “We’ve decided that we’re going to return to being in the office the way we were before the onset of COVID…When we look back over the last five years, we continue to believe that the advantages of being together in the office are significant.”
Mentioning that teams function better when the staff work together, he specified that the new mandate goes into effect from January 2, 2025.
