According to a Metro report, Russian Health Minister Dr. Yevgeny Shestopalov suggested that office break can be used to have intimate relationships with one another

Russia, which is facing a continuous decline in population and a sharp drop in its birth rates, has taken a unique step to address this issue. In a controversial step, the country has now appealed to its citizens to use their work breaks to have sex.

Health Minister Dr. Yevgeny Shestopalov advised office goers to use lunch and coffee time to have intimate relations with one another. Shestopalov’s statement comes amid sharp decrease in Russia’s fertility rate from 2.1 to about 1.5 per woman. This problem has worsened ever since the war with Ukraine as young Russians are seen migrating from the country.

Shestopalov said on Monday that people should not be step back from reproducing children owing to their busy work schedules. A Metro report said he suggested that office break can be used to have intimate relationships given the fast pace of modern life.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already stated that protecting Russian people is the top priority of the nation.

It should be noted that recently Russia’s birth rate has fallen to its lowest level since 1999. The situation has become dire amid an 18 per cent increase in deaths, partly due to the Ukraine war. The Kremlin has implemented several measures to boost birth rates. These include offering free fertility tests to women aged 18-40 in Moscow and proposing a plan to incentivize employers to help women employees have children.

In addition to this, access to abortion facilities has been restricted. Divorce fees have been increased to discourage separation among couples. Russian politician Anna Kuznetsova has also advocated that women should start having children at the age of 19-20 to increase their families.
