A Bengaluru resident from Uttarakhand added a safety label in both Kannada and English while disposing of broken glass in the Silicon Valley of India.

A woman took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to share how her friend cleverly bridged the Kannada language gap using Google. Her friend, originally from Uttarakhand and living in Bengaluru for over a decade, wrapped broken glass for disposal and added safety instructions in both English and Kannada. This ensured that the sanitation workers in the Silicon Valley of India could safely handle the waste without risking injury.

“A friend of mine (non-Kannadiga), someone from Uttarakhand, who has lived in Bengaluru for a decade and more, translated the words using Google and wrapped the broken glasses so that our paurakarmikas don’t have to suffer dealing with broken glasses!” wrote the woman who uses the handle @suchi_a on the micro-blogging platform.

“This is all I guess non-Hindi speaking states are asking! Respect our language and treat it at par with yours. Non-Hindi speakers don’t expect you to speak Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, or Bengali when they visit, work, or live in Hindi-speaking states!” she added.

The picture features a packet containing broken glass, with a safety label written in both Kannada and English. The label simply reads, “Broken glass.”

A text, inserted into the picture, reads, “Pourakarmikas have a tough job. Let’s not make it harder for them. I hope the Google translation is correct.”

The resident’s thoughtful gesture earned praises from the Internet, with an individual saying, “Much appreciated. See, it’s not that hard.”

“This should be basic,” added another.

A third commented, “That’s all it takes. I’m also going to copy her strategy of labelling broken glass. I seal it up well. But never thought of labelling.”

“Nowadays everyone has a smartphone. This language barrier can easily be overcome by using some patience and mutual understanding. But people nowadays don’t have patience,” said yet another.

“Great work,” wrote a fifth.
