Bill Gates in a recent interview spoke about his plans to not retire early, adding that his longtime friend has inspired him.

Bill Gates doesn’t want to retire and rest. Gates, who dropped out of Harvard in the 1970s and devoted himself to Microsoft full-time, led the company to become one of the biggest software giants. Despite the transforming accomplishments and untold fortunes, the 68-year-old billionaire philanthropist wants to continue working for another two decades if health allows.

At CNBC’s Make It interview, he also opened up about his longtime friend, Warren Buffett, adding that he wishes to follow in his footsteps. “My friend Warren Buffett still comes into the office six days a week. So, I hope my health allows me to be like Warren,” he said.

Explaining that working less “sounds awful” to him, Gates said he would like to maintain his current pace for “at least 10 years. Hopefully, it’ll be more like 20 or 30.” Though he embodies the same spirit to continue working, the Microsoft co-founder noted that his pace has slowed. “I didn’t believe in weekends and vacations. So, that was kind of out of control, how I pushed myself,” he added.

Bill Gates might have transitioned his role at Microsoft to dedicate more time toward philanthropy, but he remains a “technology advisor” for the company. Currently, he dedicates most of his time to his organisation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Through it, he makes efforts to fund potential solutions for a range of global issues like poverty, climate change, healthcare, and education.

Gates also revealed that his organisation will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025. Mentioning that there is still no cure for polio or malaria, he added, “I’m very, very committed to those things. We want to cut childhood deaths in half again, from 5 million to 2.5 million.”

Taking on these far-reaching topics, the tech magnate is bringing a five-episode series, What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates on Netflix.
