An EasyJet flight from London Gatwick to Kos International Airport in Greece had to make an emergency landing after a passenger, allegedly drunk, wreaked havoc at 30,000 feet. As per passenger accounts, the inebriated manr started abusing, broke the intercom, tried to open an emergency gate and finally attempted to storm into the cockpit, prompting the pilots to make an emergency landing at Munich International Airport. The problem passenger was arrested by German police on touchdown.
According to the New York Post, Flight U28235, an Airbus A320, took off just after 3:30 PM on a Tuesday, September 3, scheduled for a four-hour journey. The report further mentioned that the intoxicated passenger wrestled with the crew and criticised the captain calling him “rubbish”.
Throughout the flight, the unidentified passenger reportedly used vulgar language, including shouting, “I ain’t your f****** mate, you c***,” at other passengers. He also continuously demanded drinks from the flight attendants, made inappropriate remarks at one of them, and insulted another passenger by calling them “ugly.” Throughout his tantrums, he also boasted about having served time in prison, as per a fellow passenger.
Post the incident, EasyJet Airlines said in a statement, “While such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard. The flight was delayed overnight while we arranged a replacement crew and provided customers with hotel accommodation and meals along with updates on the flight’s departure this afternoon. While this was outside of our control, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused,”
According to a report in The Sun, a woman, initially thought to be his companion, apologised for his actions, blaming it on having “one too many” drinks but later distanced herself from him.
A TikTok video shared on X by Flight Mode captured the moment German police boarded the plane to handle the unruly passenger. The footage shows the police handcuffing and escorting him off the aircraft as the other passengers cheered on.
One visibly upset passenger shouted from the back, “Get off, you loser,” as the German police escorted the troublemaker. The video also shows passengers cheering for a fellow traveller who reportedly restrained the man until the plane landed safely.
The handle also shared a photo of the passenger, handcuffed and lying at the bottom of the aircraft steps on the tarmac.
On Tuesday night, many passengers were left stranded at a local Marriott Hotel, waiting for updates on their connecting flight to Greece scheduled for Wednesday. According to a source quoted by The Sun, the ordeal was described as “harrowing and upsetting,” particularly when the intoxicated man attempted to force his way into the cockpit.
“It’s every flyer’s worst nightmare and this was a holiday flight full of young families. The man was so drunk and there was rising anger at how he was allowed to board the plane so clearly sozzled, let alone continue drinking,” the source added.
