MAFS’ Mel Schilling spills major career news as health battle continues: ‘A complex time’

-

Married At First Sight’s Mel Schilling has taken to Instagram to share a health update to her friends and followers, as she resumes filming for the next season of MAFS. Mel announced late last year she had been diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent surgery to remove a tumour she nicknamed ‘Terry’.

Speaking to her 230,000 followers, Mel said she was settled back into Sydney for the next few months, saying her husband and daughter came and spent the first month with her in Australia before heading back to the UK.

Mel recently spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle about her health, saying she felt like she was back in her “body again” and spoke about the importance of finding the right balance as she recovers after finishing chemotherapy.

“I’m feeling good. I finished my chemo about a month ago. So my energy starting to return I actually feel like I’m in my body again, which is nice, but I’ll know, my treatment plan is going to be in the next few weeks,” Mel told Yahoo Lifestyle. “So that’ll be the next chapter. But it’s ongoing and we’re definitely balancing this with my family life and my travel and my work and it’s all there in the mix. So it’s a complex time but it’s an enjoyable time too.”

After a mammoth 11 seasons of the Aussie MAFS, as well as being an expert on the UK version for the last four seasons, Mel said while she loves her role on the show, she’s also excited to branch out and show off more of her skillset and is currently working on a docuseries.

“I’m really excited about the evolution of my career. I’ve now done 11 seasons of the Aussie MAFS and I’ve done four in the UK, which is amazing and as you can tell it’s still as fresh as ever. I’m still surprised every time I go into one of those commitment ceremonies. Somebody surprises me and it happened last night,” she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

“But there’s so much more to my skill set than what I’m doing and showing in that quite limited reality format.”

Mel said she is starting to look at other projects that she’s passionate about, including health.

“For me, I’m looking at some other projects that are sort of documentaries/docuseries around topics that I’m really passionate about – one obviously being my health and I’m very interested in early onset cancer, which is now considered an epidemic which is very scary,” she elaborated. “But I’m passionate about that I can now actually get a crew together and actually start shooting something that’s going to be really impactful and actually make a difference. That’s exciting, where I’m using a different part of my brain.”

To kickstart these projects in the UK, Mel has teamed up with Aussie agent Carmela Contarino to help her propel these projects further, having found that British agents didn’t quite ‘get it’.

“I love that Carmela and I both are so straightforward,” Mel said on the partnership. “There is no bullsh**t. We don’t pull punches. I know where I stand and she’ll tell me if I’m doing something that’s not right for me. There’s no airs and graces and I really am in love with that.”

As for what else the future has in store for Mel, she says that she is just getting started and is looking at continuing to branch out from the ‘reality style’ formats and start pitching her own so that she can really deep dive into the topics she is most passionate about.

“I’ve got format ideas as well that Carmela and I’ve been working together on that we’re pitching. So we have our own formats that are stepping away from that ‘reality style’ to something a little bit broader but still very much about exploring the human condition because that’s what I’m fascinated by. But just doing it in probably a more in-depth way, longer form interviews and more opportunities to sort of go deep.”

She continues, “That’s what draws me to podcasting as well. So we’ve certainly got some very exciting podcast opportunities in the mix and I love that it’s long-form because there’s so much that we do on MAFS that you don’t get to see. We had one couple on the couch last night – they’re there for an hour and 20 minutes and you probably see four minutes of that.”
