Attacks Kill at Least 3 in Western Ukraine’s Lviv Amid Wide Bombardment

-

Russia bombarded Ukraine early Wednesday, killing at least three people in Lviv, a city near the country’s western border with Poland, according to the local authorities.

A day before the wide-scale assault with drones and guided missiles, a ballistic missile attack in the eastern city of Poltava killed more than 50 people and injured scores of others. In that attack, missiles hit a military academy minutes after air-raid alarms had sounded, giving people little time to seek shelter.

On Wednesday morning, Ukrainian authorities urged a swath of the country to take cover as drones and cruise missiles flew toward a number of cities and districts, some appearing to change directions midcourse.

In Lviv, the region’s military administrator, Maksym Kozytskyi, said that drones and cruise missiles were headed toward the city and, later, that there was “very loud” impact. He told residents to remain in shelters.

In addition to the people who were killed, 22 were injured, Mr. Kozytskyi said.

At least one residential building near the city’s main train station was on fire, according to the Lviv mayor, Andriy Sadovyi. A 10-year-old and a 15-year-old were among those injured, he said on the messaging app Telegram.

In Poltava, the rescue work from Tuesday’s attack, which wounded at least 271 people, was continuing, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said. In his nightly address, Mr. Zelensky repeated his call for allies to provide air defenses, weapons and the permission to strike into Russia.
