Indian high jumpers Sharad Kumar and Mariyappan Thangavelu produced a brilliant showing on Tuesday to clinch the silver-bronze double in the men’s T63 final.
Sharad cleared a height of 1.88m to come in second, while Mariyappan scaled 1.85m to finish third. Compatriot Shailesh Kumar, who also registered a best jump of 1.85m came in fourth and missed out on the podium by a whisker.
India scripted history as they touched the 20-medal mark for the first ever time in history.
The silver-bronze double in high jump succeeded a similar result in the men’s javelin throw F46 event, in which Ajeet Singh and Sundar Singh Gurjar finished second and third respectively to add to the national contingent’s tally.
Earlier, Deepthi Jeevanji clinched the women’s 400m t20 bronze with a time of 55.82 sec to take India’s tally to 16 for the first medal of the day.
