Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and Erik Ten Hag (X)
Erik Ten Hag’s claims have made fans recall a comment by Solskjaer. The Norweigan had managed Manchester United for two seasons but failed to win any trophy.
An old comment by former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has resurfaced after the Premier League giants conceded a defeat against Liverpool yesterday, where the Red Devils were beaten by three goals to nil.
After the match, Erik ten Hag recalled his success rate as the Manchester United manager. The Dutchman, who replaced Solskjaer at Manchester United, led the club to win the Carabao Cup in 2022-23 before securing the FA Cup in May.
According to Ten Hag, these titles serve as evidence that the team has progressed a lot during his tenure.
His claims have made fans recall a comment by Solskjaer. The Norweigan had managed Manchester United for two seasons but failed to win any trophy.
During his time at the helm, Solskjaer once claimed that silverware could not be seen as a marker for the team’s development.
“It’s in the league positions if you see any progress for me. Any cup competition can give you a trophy but it’s an ego thing for managers. It’s not like a trophy will say that we’re back,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had said at a press meet. It seems Erik Ten Hag keeps a different view in this regard.
Following the recent loss to Liverpool, a reporter supposedly raised questions about Erik ten Hag’s coaching and in response, the Manchester United manager said, “Are you sure? I don’t think so… or you wouldn’t win trophies like we did and beat big opponents. I’m sorry for you. After Manchester City, we won the most trophies over the last two years. That’s the reality. Those are the facts. This year, we want to win trophies – and I am quite confident we will build up to this.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked by the Manchester United hierarchy in 2021, a few weeks after the team lost 5-0 to Liverpool. In the first season of Erik ten Hag, the team finished third in the Premier League table. They, however, were far from replicating the performance in the next campaign despite the FA Cup triumph.
Manchester United were eighth in the Premier League table at the end of the last season. This time, Ten Hag’s side has so far managed one victory in their three league fixtures.
