He asked Reddit users if he should stay home and send a goodbye email.
A man, who quit his job after 5 years, shared on Reddit that he won’t be receiving a farewell gift like others.
A man turned to Reddit for advice and comfort on quitting his job after five years. He described himself as a quiet, introverted person who was always friendly and helpful but was never the popular guy.
“I quit my job after 5 years and am feeling pretty crummy right now. I was never the loudest or most popular guy in the office, more of the quiet, reserved, introverted type – but always friendly and helpful. I wasn’t exactly Mr Popular,” he wrote on Reddit.
Despite years of his service, he was left disheartened to learn that he wouldn’t be getting any parting gift.
“It’s so embarrassing. I feel miserable, even though I always thought these little things didn’t matter. I would like to go to the meeting to at least say goodbye to people from the other teams, but the thought of everyone seeing that I’m not getting anything is awful. I’m afraid I might cry from shame. What should I do? Just stay home and send a goodbye email?” he added.
His post gained attention online, sparking reactions from social media users. One of the users empathised with the man’s situation and said, “The strongest sign you should leave is the lack of acknowledgement when you do.”
Another user said, “I know you feel rejected as you gave so much yet got nothing in return but you’ll be better off.”
One of them advised, “Hey bud, I think you need to separate work life from personal life. You don’t need to say anything. That was a place of employment for income not for friendships.”
Another commenter, acknowledging the man’s feelings, stated, “While I agree with you in one respect in another, we spend a significant amount of our lives at work and it’s completely reasonable for the op to feel sadness at such a cold goodbye.”
“I get what you’re feeling, but just mentally check out of this place and move on. You’re moving on, moving up, and putting this petty nonsense behind you,” a person encouraged.
