Ugarte becomes United’s fifth major signing of the transfer window after defenders Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui and Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee.

Manchester United finally have their wishlist ticked off as the club officially announced the signing of Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain on Friday.

The 23-year-old, who spent just one season with the French champions, joins the English giants for a reported initial 50 million euros (£42 million, $55 million), with a further 10 million euros in performance-related add-ons.

“It is an incredible feeling to join a club of this magnitude; one that is admired all around the world,” Ugarte said in a club statement.

“I’m someone who is so determined to succeed; I will sacrifice and give everything for my team-mates.

“Together we will fight to win trophies and reach the level where this club needs to be.”

The Uruguyan’s signing has come on the heels of Manchester United reportedly reaching an agreement of their own with Italian club Napoli for the sale of Scott McTominay believed to be in the region of 30m euros.

Ugarte will big goodbye to PSG after having spent just one season at the club following his arrival from Sporting Lisbon in 2023. He represented the French club in 37 matches across all competitions and won three titles including Ligue 1 title, French Cup, and Trophee des Champions.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have made a mixed start to the 2024-25 Premier League season having registered a 1-0 win over Fulham before succumbing to a 1-2 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. They next face bitter rivals Liverpool.

The start surely has put manager Erik ten Hag under renewed scrutiny as he lamented the lack of goals this season.

“We needed to be more clinical in both boxes and how we concede the goals is very soft,” Ten Hag said after the defeat against Brighton.

“It shouldn’t have happened, we should be better organised in such moments. Also on the other hand, when you create the chances we did, we should score more goals, especially the one with the overload, where everyone thought it was a goal. Also, before half-time, we created chances. The best chance was from Amad after the cross of Diogo Dalot and, after that, Mason Mount had a very good chance,” he added.
