Biden announced his shock decision in writing to the nation and soon after endorsed Harris
US Vice President Kamala Harris was flipping pancakes and frying bacon with her family when the phone rang. It was Joe Biden calling to tell her he was ending his reelection bid and backing her to take his place.
“My family was staying with us, and including my baby nieces, and we had just had pancakes,” Harris recalled Thursday in an interview with CNN about the July 21 afternoon when Biden suddenly turned the November presidential election on its head.
NEW: A very humble Kamala Harris says her first thought when Joe Biden dropped out of the race was not about herself, it was about Joe.Harris appeared to get emotional as she recalled the phone call she received from Biden who told her he was dropping out.

Harris and the children were chatting — “Auntie, can I have more bacon?’ ‘Yes, I’ll make you more bacon’” — she said. “And the phone rang, and it was Joe Biden.” Biden had been under growing pressure for weeks to drop out amid fears that at 81 and visibly frail, he was going to lose the race and allow Donald Trump easily to win a second term.
‘Are you sure?’
Biden announced his shock decision in writing to the nation and soon after endorsed Harris, who has since surged in popularity, reinvigorating her downbeat Democratic Party. “He told me what he had decided to do. And I asked him, ‘Are you sure?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ And that’s how I learned about it,” she said.
Harris defended Biden, saying his presidency would be appreciated more in hindsight. “I think history is going to show… in so many ways it was transformative.”
Harris Leads Trump
Since becoming the Democratic candidate for president last month, Harris has surged in the polls, brought in hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign donations, and had a series of forceful campaign speeches. She leads Trump 45% to 41% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Thursday that showed the vice president sparking new enthusiasm among voters.
Some critics suggested she might be less polished in unscripted settings like a TV interview, but she appeared to make no major mistakes on Thursday. Harris defended her and Biden’s handling of inflation, saying they inherited a pandemic-ravaged economy that she said Trump had mismanaged. She said much work had been done to lower prices but that “prices are still too high.”
