The Indian mission in Malaysia on Wednesday said that authorities are continuing their search for an Indian woman who fell into a sinkhole last Friday, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation.

The high commission reported that local authorities are methodically exploring new possible paths and locations to find the missing Indian national, Vijaya Lakshmi Gali, who fell into a sinkhole in the Malaysian capital on August 23.

The operation remains focused on the main location of the incident on Jalan Masjid India, Malay Mail reported. Police have cordoned off the area with yellow tape, leading to the closure of nearby business premises to ensure public safety. The search and rescue operation has used various techniques, including tracker dogs and the ‘jetting’ method to search for Vijaya Lakshmi.

The Indian High Commission said that local authorities, apart from police, fire and rescue department, Indah water consortium, KL Federal Territories agencies supported by Civil Defence Forces and specialised scientific teams with sophisticated equipment were now involved in the search.

“After flushing through portions of drain system, search is being augmented with specialised techniques including high-pressure water jets to remove obstacles, remote cameras and ground penetrating radars to map inaccessible areas,” it wrote. The Indian mission said it is in close contact with the relevant agencies engaged in the search efforts as the search has entered its fifth day. The mission said that its officers are also in touch with the family members to extend continued support.
