Tamil Nadu Doctor Alleges Religious Discrimination By Cop Who Came For Passport Verification

A doctor from Tamil Nadu recently shared a troubling experience on X, revealing that she had faced discrimination due to her husband’s religion. According to her post, a policeman visited her home for official purposes but refused to drink tea or coffee using the same vessels as her family, citing their different religious backgrounds. Additionally, she claimed that the policeman misbehaved with her brother-in-law before leaving.

“Had a #policeofficer come to my house for police verification for a passport. We offered coffee or tea, but he said he cannot eat in the vessels we eat. You’re #muslims right? he asked. So my mother-in-law got him a slice in a glass bottle we don’t drink from,” wrote Christianez Ratna Kiruba.

She further elaborated, “This was the first discriminatory experience that I have witnessed. I think South India has coddled me too much. The North really shows the inequalities of India. He left some Slice in the bottle and asked my brother-in-law to finish the leftover Slice, before he left.” The incident, she noted, was “very shocking and traumatic.”

Christianez Ratna Kiruba identifies as a Christian and is married to a Muslim man. She expressed that while the policeman had every right to refuse tea, his request for her brother-in-law to finish the leftover drink was inappropriate and unacceptable.

Her post quickly went viral, garnering over a million views and resonating with many who shared similar stories of their own.

One user responded, “Society has changed now. Just a couple of years ago, my colleagues visiting Vaishno Devi would bring packed prasad packets, and I brought dates from Hajj. Nothing was taboo. During my college days, I used to meet my friend on Tuesday evenings, who would offer Hanumanji’s Prasad.”

Another user added, “I bet they don’t discriminate while asking for a bribe.”

A third user commented, “Poor him, I think he fails to understand that the people who work in the factory that manufactured the Slice, the one who handled it until it reached hand, might be the same people who he considers untouchables!”
