Vinesh Phogat, who announced her retirement from wrestling after being disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024 due to being overweight, has remained tight-lipped about her future.
Star wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who became the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic final before being disqualified due to being 100 gm overweight, has remained tight-lipped about her future. The 30-year-old from Haryana, who defeated Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki in her first match of the Paris Olympics 2024 on August 6 before getting the better of wrestlers from Ukraine and Cuba to secure a place in the gold medal match, announced her retirement from wrestling after she was denied an opportunity to fight for the gold medal.
Ever since her return from Paris, there have been talks about her entry into politics as well as the u-turn of her retirement decision. But during an event on Sunday, when Vinesh was asked about her future, she remained silent and said that she has no idea what she will do in the future.
“I am feeling good; my people are standing with me… Nothing is bigger than that. Who knows about the future? I don’t know what I will do in the future. I am here today among my people; this is my medal… I am happy,” she told ANI on Sunday.

After being disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024 due to being 100 gm overweight, Phogat appealed at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but her appeal was rejected on August 14.
In her appeal, Vinesh had demanded that she be given a joint silver with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to her in the semifinals but was promoted to the summit clash following her disqualification.
The CAS, while rejecting her appeal, reasoned that it is an athlete’s responsibility to stay within the weight limit and no relief can be provided on that count, but termed “draconian” the consequence of failing the weigh-in on the second day.
Three-time CWG champion
Even though Vinesh failed to win the elusive Olympic medal in Paris this year, she is one of the greatest Indian wrestlers of all time. She is a three-time gold medallist in the Commonwealth Games, and in addition to that, she has also won one gold medal in the Asian Games and two bronze medals in the World Championships.
