India at Paris Paralympics 2024: Top Medal Contenders – News18

With their largest contingent in Paralympic Games, India are eyeing their best-ever medal haul at Paris 2024, which is scheduled to be held from August 28 to September 8.

India’s biggest-ever contingent comprises 84 athletes across 12 disciplines – archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo and will look to surpass their record haul of 19 medals (5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze) from the Tokyo Paralympics.

India’s Medal Hopefuls at 2024 Paris Paralympics:

Sumit Antil | Para Athletics

Sumit Antil is the defending Paralympic champion and also a two-time defending world champion in the men’s javelin F64. The 26-year-old will aim to break his own world record of 73.29m at Paris 2024.

Deepthi Jeevanji | Para Athletics

Deepthi Jeevanji made history at the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships as she set a world record in the women’s 400m T20 category with a time of 55.06 seconds. A gold medalist at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Para Games, she will look to get the top prize at Paris 2024.

Pranav Soorma | Para Athletics

Pranav Soorma clinched gold at the 2022 Asian Para Games with new meet record in the men’s Club Throw F51 event with a throw of 30.01 metres. The 30-year-old recently shatteed the world record with a 37.23m effort at the Paris Paralympics trials.

Mariyappan Thangavelu | Para Athletics

Mariyappan Thangavelu is legend in para sports in the men’s high jump T-63 category, having already clinched gold at Rio 2016 and silver at Tokyo 2020. He also earned silver at the Asian Games and gold at the World Championships. The 29-year-old from Salem, Tamil Nadu will look to get his crown back at Paris 2024.

Sachin Khilari | Para Athletics

Sachin Sarjerao Khilari won the gold medal in the men’s Shot Put F46 category with an Asian Record of 16.30m at the World Para Athletic Championships. He had also won the top prize at the previous edition and will look to grab gold at Paris 2024.

Ekta Bhyan | Para Athletics

Ekta Bhyan had clinched gold medal in the women’ F51 club throw competition at the World Para Athletic Championships with a season’s best throw of 20.12m. She will want to replicate her strong showing at Paris 2024.

Simran Sharma | Para Athletics

Simran Sharma won gold in the women’s 200m T12 event, with a personal best time of 24.95 seconds, at the World Para Athletics Championships. She will look to grab the top proze at Paris 2024.

Avani Lekhara | Para Shooting

Avani Lekhara will look to defend her gold medal in the R2 women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event and do better than bronze in the R8 women’s 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 event. She had also won gold at the 2022 Asian Para Games as she looks to break more records and establish milestones.

Mona Agarwal | Para Shooting

Mona Agarwal is in good form winning the top prize at back-to-back World Cup and will be eyeing gold in the women’s 10m air rifle SH1 category at Paris 2024.

Manish Narwal | Para Shooting

Manish Narwal will look to defend his gold in the mixed 50m pistol SH1 event from Tokyo 2020 as the Khel Ratna awardee clinched bronze at 2022 Asian Para Games.

Sheetal Devi | Para Archery

Sheetal Devi will look to add to her gold from the 2022 Asian Para Games and is strong contender in the individual compound and mixed team compound events at Paralympics.

Harvinder Singh | Para Archery

Harvinder Singh has form on his side after winning bronze medals at the World Archery Oceania Para Grand Prix as well as at the Para Archery World Ranking event. He will look to better his bronze in the individual recurve open from Tokyo 2020.

Krishna Nagar | Para Badminton

Krishna Nagar will look to defend his gold in the men’s singles SH6 from Tokyo 2020 and followed it up winning the top prize at the 2024 World Championships. The 26-year-old from Jaipur will want to continue his dominance with another gold at Paris 2024.

Manasi Joshi | Para Badminton

Manasi Joshi clinched bronze medals at the World Championships and won a silver and a bronze at the 2022 Asian Para Games. The 35-year-old world number one will look to make her mark at Paris 2024.

Mandeep Kaur | Para Badminton

Mandeep Kaur clinched bronze in the women’s doubles and mixed categories at the 2022 World Championships. Her strong performances, albeit inconsistent, can yield another medal at Paris 2024.
