Most people can probably hold their breath for two minutes. However, many animals are made to hold their breath for long. Apart from this, some species, such as fish, crabs, and lobsters, can breathe underwater. But do you know which creature can survive for 6 days without breathing? Nature has created it in such a way that it can hold its breath for a long time.

According to reports, the creature is none other than the scorpion. The structure of the scorpion’s lungs is such that it can hold its breath for a long time. Because they have a special type of lungs called book lungs. This is the main respiratory organ in most arachnids (spiders and scorpions). Book lungs are within small openings in the abdomen of the arachnid. The book lungs themselves consist of a series of hemolymph-filled, plate-like structures.

So the scorpions can hold a good amount of air in their lungs, and this continues to happen even during the process of breathing. This is the reason that, due to the reserved amount of air, they can survive for 6 days without inhaling air.

Meanwhile, recently, a page on Instagram named FactbyScience shared a photo of a scorpion and revealed that a scorpion can hold its breath for 6 days, can survive a whole year without food, can climb almost every surface, and glows under ultraviolet light. Take a look at the post:

The post is currently going viral, while many people shared their reactions in the comment box. One of the users wrote, “Strong insect.” Another one added, “Why do you frighten me even further?? While many people left surprise emojis in the comments section.

Aside from scorpions, turtles can spend the whole winter in deep hibernation at the bottom of a frozen lake, without utilizing their lungs at all. During this phase of nearly full system shutdown, the turtle breathes out of its highly vascularized buttocks, allowing it to take in a small amount of oxygen. Sleeping sea turtles can hold their breath for up to 7 hours. On the other hand, loggerhead turtles can spend up to 40 minutes foraging underwater.
