Hyderabad has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for Monday, August 19. The downpour caused significant traffic disruptions and widespread waterlogging across the city. Amid these challenging conditions, an unusual incident occurred at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), when water began to leak inside a terminal. A passenger captured a video showing water dripping from the ceiling, with the affected area cordoned off by temporary barricades.
The video was shared on X along with the caption, “Hyderabad Airport joins the Leaky Roof Infrastructure Party.”
“There was heavy rainfall from 13:10 to 14:00 hrs at Hyderabad Airport, approximately 35.2 mm out of which 17 mm rainfall happened in just 10 mins,” Times Now quoted the official statement from the GMR Hyderabad International Airport.
“The water spilled into the terminal at one location, we immediately inspected the roof and there is absolutely no leakage / choking / water stagnation / foreign objects on the roof. Our team is engaging with the technical experts to ensure this spillage into the terminal should not happen again,” it added.
The video, shared over two days ago, garnered significant attention online, amassing over 20,000 views. The comment section was abuzz with a range of reactions from social media users.
One user voicing their disappointment, wrote, “What is this RGIA Hyderabad. I thought GMR would maintain some standards in construction. Seems like everyone doesn’t maintain some safety and quality standards in construction. What if that roof collapses like what happened in the Delhi terminal. This is a new extension opened recently.”

Another added, “Isn’t this in the newly expanded terminal. One can see it is poorly finished.”

“This shows the quality of material GMR uses. There are so many such incidents. Most of the time, the elevators don’t work. All shopkeepers charge hefty and blame GMR. Airport charges user fees, and provides third grade Chinese quality. They should exit the business,” someone remarked.

A person commented, “RGIA is being expanded and works are underway currently. Maybe this is somewhere under the new roof that is being constructed. But still.. this is not acceptable.”

In June, a section of the roof at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi collapsed following the heavy rainfall in the city. The incident claimed one life and left six others injured.
