A man from Las Vegas named John Pennington’s life suffered a severe setback when at the age of 30, he sustained severe injuries in a car accident, which left him in a coma. John’s troubles didn’t end even when he woke up from the coma. According to his account shared on Reddit, he was slapped with a staggering $ 2.5 million (Rs 2,09,67,775) bill for his hospital stay. This amount excluded the additional costs from his 2 rehab treatments at the Nevada Community Enrichment Program. In the Reddit post, John wrote that he woke up one day in 2015 thinking it was time to go to work. For some reason, he found himself strapped to a bed in the hospital. When he met eyes with the attending nurse and asked if he could use the bathroom, she teared up and ran out of the room. The nurse returned a few minutes later to apologise to him. She told John that for the past 6 months, he had been in a coma due to a very severe traumatic brain injury. The neurologist had said if John did eventually wake up, he wouldn’t be able to do much of anything.
John added that he had created a GoFundMe page to help cover the expenses of his treatment. When that proved inadequate, he took the help of his lawyer to help him cover the costs. John’s lawyer readily stepped up to help him. When he paid all the medical expenses, John was able to have a sigh of relief.
John organised a Q/A session amongst the social media users to enlighten the people about his situation. One of the users asked, “Was your employer surprised when you finally showed up?”.
A user replied that John’s employer was amazing, kept his insurance active and paid for an entire year. The user also added that a few of his bosses and the vice president of the company would regularly visit him. According to her, John’s employers would also take his clothes home to wash them. “I couldn’t say enough amazing things about the support they gave John before and during this time. Even still today, they are one of his biggest supporters.”
According to John, it’s a lonely place for someone after coming out of a coma.
