Bangladesh Recalls 7 Envoys, Including From US, Russia; Staffers from Delhi High Commission

Sources informed that several staffers from Bangladesh High Command from New Delhi have also been called back to Dhaka

The newly formed interim government of Bangladesh has recalled ambassadors posted in the United States, Russia, Japan, Maldives, Germany, Saudi Arabia and UAE and has ordered them to return to Dhaka.

According to Bangladeshi media reports, the country’s Foreign Ministry issued an order on August 14. The notifications, published on the Ministry’s website, also state that the ambassadors and the high commissioner have been transferred to Dhaka.

“Therefore, you are requested to leave your current duties and return to Dhaka immediately,” each of the notifications read.

Meanwhile, sources informed that several staffers from Bangladesh High Command from New Delhi have also been called back to Dhaka.

The ambassadors who are called back are: 

  • Ambassador Mohammad Imran in Washington
  • Ambassador Kamrul Hasan in Russia
  • Ambassador Javed Patwary in Saudi Arabia
  • Ambassador Shahabuddin Ahmed in Japan
  • Ambassador Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan in Germany
  • Ambassador Abu Zafar in the UAE
  • High Commissioner Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad in the Maldives

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has started an investigation against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and nine others on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity that took place from July 15 to August 5 during the students’ mass movement against her government.

‘Genocide’ Probe Against Sheikh Hasina & Others

A complaint was filed on Wednesday with the investigation agency of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal against Sheikh Hasina, Awami League general secretary and former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and several other prominent figures within the party.

The complainant’s lawyer Gazi MH Tamim confirmed on Thursday that the tribunal started the probe on Wednesday night, news agency PTI reported.
