Instances of casting couch have long been an issue in the entertainment industry, affecting not just Bollywood and Hollywood but other industries as well. Over the years, many celebrities have courageously shared their experiences of facing casting couch incidents with directors and other cast members. Despite India’s cultural setting, performers are increasingly vocal about these issues and are taking a stand. Speaking of which, actor Siddhant Karnick who was a part of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal has now come forward. After nearly two decades, he finally opened up about a casting couch incident he encountered.
In a conversation with the Hindustan Times, Siddhant revealed that he was just 22 when he had such an experience. Recalling that he met a coordinator who asked for his portfolio and invited him to his house late at night, the actor further shared how he was left in an uncomfortable spot. “It felt odd, but I went ahead with it,” Siddhant said.
The actor added, “There were family photographs all around, and it looked like a safe environment. But something was off. The coordinator spoke about industry norms and slightly hinted at compromising for career opportunities. ‘Kuch compromise nahin karoge, tab tak kaam nahin ayega,’ he said, and I realised where this was leading.’ I was very young at the time, and despite all the family photographs, I didn’t think much of it. But then this guy came closer to me, and that’s when I said I’m not interested in this kind of work, especially not through these means.”
The actor also revealed how his rejection upset the coordinator, who even threatened to sabotage Karnick’s career. Paying no heed to the threats, Siddhant decided to take a stand.
He then recalled meeting the coordinator several years later at an event. “He came to congratulate me. Some of my shows were doing well, and I’ve come to understand that it’s all about the vibes one gives. They are not rapists, but opportunists who don’t change. If you don’t give him a chance, he won’t come for you,” he said.
On the work front, Siddhant Karnick started his career on television and went on to feature in several shows. His most popular TV stints came with Pyaar Kii Yeh Ek Kahaani and Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani. Later, the actor also made his debut in Bollywood and made notable appearances in films like Thappad, Adipurush and Animal.
