Former UK student banned from campus pleads guilty in assault caught on video

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – A former University of Kentucky student accused in an assault on campus has pleaded guilty.

Court officials say Sophia Rosing pleaded guilty Monday.

She had been previously indicted by a grand jury on six counts, including assault and public intoxication. As part of a plea deal, the assault third-degree charge against her was amended to assault fourth-degree-minor injury. She pleaded guilty to the other charges.

The incident happened in November 2022. A video shows Rosing in a dorm, hitting and shouting racial slurs at a Black student worker.

The university permanently banned her from campus after the incident.

Prosecutors recommended a sentence of 12 months in jail, 100 hours of community service, and a $25 fine. She’ll be sentenced on October 17.
