The Indian government is in touch with Bangladesh’s military leadership after the dramatic fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime, sources told CNN-News18 on Tuesday.

Hasina resigned and fled to India on Monday while reportedly seeking asylum in the West as protests and violence that began last month in Bangladesh after student groups demanded scrapping of a controversial quota system in government jobs boiled over. The demonstrations escalated into a campaign to seek the ouster of Hasina, who won a fourth straight term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition.

“Stability and peace are important,” a top Indian government source told CNN-News18. “Indian authorities have reached out to the military leadership in Dhaka.”

Top Indian government officials have contacted Bangladesh’s army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman and asked for law and order to be maintained and violence to be stopped, the sources said.

“Indian officials have told them that in case they need any help to maintain peace and law and order, India is ready to extend all support,” said a source. “This is a major development after Hasina came to India, and now India is in touch with the new leadership.”

Over 100 people have been killed in the violence across Bangladesh amid the political crisis, reports said on Tuesday even as there were signs of a return to normalcy. The situation in Dhaka was largely calm on Tuesday morning after a day of unrest and a night of tension. Buses and other public transport were on the streets and traders were opening shops.
