Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled her palace earlier in the day as protesters demanding her resignation roamed the streets of the capital Dhaka

A crowd of protestors stormed into Ganobhaban, the official residence of Bangladesh Prime Minister on Monday. Sheikh Hasina fled her palace earlier in the day as protesters demanding her resignation roamed the streets of the capital Dhaka. She departed from Bangabhaban around 2:30 pm on Monday, boarding a military helicopter with her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, for a “safer place,” according to local media reports.

Sheikh Hasina’s Helicopter Heading To India

According to a BBC Bangla report, Sheikh Hasina’s helicopter is heading to Agartala, India. She has been given the green light by the Indian government for entry into India, according to sources. Despite initial security concerns, top Indian government officials are coordinating her arrival.

Protests

Bangladesh has been engulfed by protests and violence since last month after student groups demanded the scrapping of a controversial quota system in government jobs. The protests then escalated into a campaign to seek the ouster of Hasina, who won a fourth straight term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition. At least 91 people were killed and hundreds injured on Sunday in a wave of violence across the country.

Sheikh Hasina’s son urged the country’s security forces to block any takeover from her rule, while a senior advisor told AFP that her resignation was a “possibility” after being questioned as to whether she would quit.

“Your duty is to keep our people safe and our country safe and to uphold the constitution,” her son, US-based Sajeeb Wazed Joy, said in a post on Facebook.
